- 1). Estimate the surface dimensions of your pond. You will use barley straw based on the surface dimensions of your pond at a rate of 0.025 lbs. of straw per square yard. Barley straw may be purchased from a pond supply store.
- 2). Stuff barley straw into mesh bags. Water will flow through the bags and collect chemicals from the straw as it moves.
- 3). Tie the bottom of each bag with a cord to a weight such as a plastic bag filled with rocks. The weight will hold the bag in place.
- 4). Tie the top of the bag to a foam float. The float will hold the bag upright in the water.
- 5). Place each bag in the current of your pond. A good location for your bag is near a waterfall or a submerged nozzle.
