The humble skeleton costume has grown to become one of the scariest costumes you'll find when it comes to Halloween costume ideas.
It's been used in film throughout time, from the Karate kid to becoming the iconic symbol for the Scream Trilogy.
So why has it been used - and isn't it just a harmless Halloween costume? Surely others costumes are scarier? Part of the reason it is so scary is because it represents total anonymity.
Going back to the karate Kid, it was used when the main character Daniel was being chased by the Kobra Kai - the Karate Team that were ready to attack him.
They were all wearing the same sleek skeleton costume - and individuals were totally unrecognizable.
And then the Scream trilogy set in.
It started out being an amusing way to make fun of cheap Halloween costumes as it could be bought or hired at any costume store or online.
But then turned into something else when it meant that it was the number 1 barrier to the police finding out who the killer was - keeping the audience guessing all the time.
The scariness of the costume came from the anonymity of it.
But also from the idea that underneath that innocent Halloween costume lurked a psychotic killer who was impossible to identify and catch.
So it's a nice combination of mild innocence and anonymity that make the skeleton costume the scariest Halloween costume.
It's widespread availability made it the perfect costume in which to commit a crime and get away with it.
So it wasn't the costume as much as the psycho underneath the costume that invoked the fear! And an even scarier way to use the skeleton costume is when it's worn in a group - as done in the karate kid.
Some of the scenes in the film were quite mesmerizing when the lead character was surrounded by many people all dressed in the same costume.
With all the horror films using skeletons, it's no wonder you might think twice if someone rings your doorbell this Halloween wearing one.
Mind you there are some really cute toddler costumes out there also.
I've not even touched on the number of really scary variations on the humble skeleton costumes out there - including flesh rotting zombies with a piece of skeleton exposed, and skeleton pirates with amazing Hollywood style make up.
It's all very 'Shaun of the Dead'.
Finally - the best bit about the skeleton costume is the fact that you'll never get people asking 'what are you supposed to be' at a fancy dress party or this Halloween season.
And if you've got a group of people, you can really cause havoc!
