How to Devein and Clean Shrimp

    • 1). To peel a shrimp, first pull off the small legs.

Once the legs are removed, peel back and remove the shell and the tail.

    • 2). To make sure you have removed the entire shell, run the shrimp under water and slide off any remaining shell.

    • 3

Once you remove the shell, you can devein the shrimp.

The black "vein" along the back of a shrimp is edible. Many people prefer to remove it so the shrimp looks more appealing to eat.

    • 4). To begin, hold the shrimp in one hand with the tail end facing you and the curved side up.
Take a small paring knife or deveining tool and make a shallow cut down the curved back of the shrimp. This will expose the digestive tract, or "vein."

To remove the vein, you can either use a toothpick or a knife tip, or you can run the shrimp under cold water and remove it with your finger.

The shrimp is ready to use in your favorite recipe!
