- 1). Obtain a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Nutritionists must have one in order to practice.
Your concentration should be in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service systems management, or a related area. - 2). Obtain a license, statutory certification or registration. There are 46 states with laws in place to govern being a nutritionist. Of these states, 33 require licensure, 12 require statutory certification and one requires registration.
- 3). Maintain your status. To do so, you must complete at least 75 hours in approved continuing education classes every five years.
- 4). Advance. A master's degree in a field such as public health greatly aids your chances of obtaining a managerial position.
