- 1). Measure the circumference of the tree trunk. After you have determined the size of the tree, read the instructions on the back of the dry fertilizer to find out how much to use for the size of the tree.
- 2). Spread the fertilizer on top of the tree roots and around the base of the trunk. If the soil around the tree is rocky, drill holes in the soil before spreading the fertilizer. This will ensure that the fertilizer will penetrate the ground.
- 3). Water thoroughly so the fertilizer will be absorbed into the soil.
- 4). Apply mulch around the tree to help it absorb nutrients and moisture.
- 5). Repeat steps 1 through 3 once a month to ensure that the tree stays healthy.
