Alpha Blockers

Updated July 22, 2014.

Definition: Alpha blockers are medications that may be recommended for a couple of reasons. In the context of the treatment of an enlarged prostate, known technically as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), alpha blockers relax the muscles of the prostate and improve urinary flow. In general, alpha blockers only provide moderate symptom improvement. This may be adequate treatment in some situations, but insufficient in others.

Pronunciation: al fa block ers

Examples: His urologist prescribed an elpha blocker to help with the bothersome symptoms of an enlarged prostate or BPH.
