How to Be a Photography Assistant

    • 1). Compile a portfolio that showcases your current photographic abilities. If you've attended high school or college photography courses, include prints of photos you took in school. The Guardian recommends a portfolio of 25 to 30 pages that show off your knowledge of composition and exposure. The portfolio doesn't need to be professional quality, as you're just starting out, but it should show that you have basic knowledge of the art form.

    • 2). Research photographers working in your area who specialize in a style you're interested in and passionate about. For example, if you love wedding photography, research wedding photographers. You can conduct research on the Internet by performing a search for photographers working in your area. You can also attend a photography conference or meet-up, browse local photography magazines to find working photographers near you, or attend exhibits of local photographers at a gallery. Look at the portfolios and styles of the photographers and create a list of those you're interested in working with.

    • 3). Call and email all of the photographers on your list and tell them you're interested in working as a photography assistant. Most photographers only employ one assistant at a time, so be prepared to be turned down initially. Market yourself over the phone and tell the photographer about any relevant experience you have in the field and mention that you have a portfolio. Shutterbug.com also recommends discussing your specific interest in the photographer and why you want to work with him. Once you've caught the interest of a photographer, schedule a meeting to discuss working together.

    • 4). Meet with the photographer and bring your portfolio. Dress professionally and present yourself as a professional, even if you're not yet familiar with the industry. Discuss why you're interested in photography and what you hope to accomplish in becoming a photographer's assistant. Ask specific questions about the photographer's expectations and what she can teach you. Some photographers may simply want an assistant to carry equipment, while others plan to teach you skills and prepare you for a career working as a professional photographer. Some may pay assistants, while others may not and may treat you as an unpaid apprentice while you learn. Discuss any concerns you have upfront so you know exactly what to expect when working with that photographer. Find out if she expects you to own a specific camera or other equipment, and prepare to purchase this equipment if necessary.

    • 5). Work the hours assigned to you by the photographer and always be punctual and professional. Ask questions when the time is appropriate, and be sure to stay out of the way when the photographer is taking pictures.

    • 6). Research independently outside of work. Subscribe to photography magazines or spend time on photography websites. Familiarize yourself with different styles of photography, different types of cameras and other types of equipment. It's important to build as much knowledge as possible while assisting, as this will help you better assist the photographer. It'll also help you in preparing for a career as a photographer.

    • 7). Attend events with the photographer you're assisting. These are excellent networking opportunities that allow you to meet important people in the industry, including magazine editors, models or bloggers who can help further your career.
