The Pentax SMC DA* series 16-50 f/2.8 AL SDM Wide Angle Zoom or simply known as Pentax 16-50 lens is a DA series lens which is made exclusively for Pentax Digital SLR cameras. The lens is a high quality bright lens with an f/2.8 maximum aperture. The lens gives you an ultra wide to medium zoom range and can be used to take imagery of a wide verity of elements from landscapes to personal or even group portraits and snapshots. The lens offers a blend of different optical technologies like lens coating, optical elements as well as glass and aspherical elements.
The Pentax 16-50 comes with a built-in SDM system which allows it to make use of the supersonic motor which in effect provides quieter and smoother auto focus operations to commence. When used with a K10D DSLR camera the focus is switched automatically to SDM auto focusing. When mounting it on an older SLR from the Pentax film era, the normal autofocus mode with a regular, mounted motor is selected.
The Pentax 16-50 telephoto lens has two different ED elements with three different spherical elements which makes sure that spherical and chromatic aberrations are suppressed. Due to these elements, the images produced are sharp, clear and of high quality. The body is made in such a way that it provides protection from dust and rain which makes the lens more weather resistant and handy in hard seasoned conditions. SP coating has been used which has made it water and finger prints resistant as well.
The Pentax 16-50 lens also has the Quick Shift Focus System feature which makes it able to instantly switch focus from auto to manual. The image circle has also been designed to match and equal the smaller and meager size of the image recording surface of APS-C DSLRs so that it provides optimum optical performance for the camera's special digital imaging sensor.
Overall, the Pentax 16-50 lens is a good additional lens to your collection. The lens provides a wide variety of images from landscapes to snapshots which makes it very versatile. Although the Pentax 16-50 lens is considered to be a wide range zoom lens, it is also very good at providing medium room range snapshots and is a welcome addition to any photographers' collection because of its true to life imagery and excellent quality. The lens is also quite handy because it is easy to use even in bad weather conditions. The performance of the Pentax 16-50 is quite satisfactory to say the least.
