- 1). Obtain an individual income tax return from any post office, IRS office or from the IRS website. You can use form 1040EZ, form 1040A or form 1040. The form you use is entirely up to you, though form 1040EZ is the simplest form to file. The other two forms are for more complicated tax returns.
- 2). Enter your name, Social Security number and address at the top of your income tax form. If you use a form that requires you enter your filing status -- 1040A or 1040 -- check the box for "Single."
- 3). Enter any wages and federal income tax withholding found on your W2s or 1099s. Because you are a dependent you cannot claim your own deduction, so you will not get any tax exemptions.
- 4). Follow the directions on the instruction form for the income tax form you are filling out. Each line is explained clearly so that it is easily understood. Enter any refund in the box provided and enter your bank account number and routing number if you decide to have your refund electronically deposited into your bank account. Otherwise, a paper check is mailed to the address listed on the form.
- 5). Mail your return to the IRS using the address listed on the instruction form for residents of your state.
