- 1). Find out if you are eligible for a tax credit. The tax credit is only available to those who purchased an energy-efficient furnace. If you are planning on buying a new furnace, choose a home-heating option that is Energy-Star rated.
- 2). Keep copies of all receipts of purchase. These records are needed when you file a claim for the furnace tax credit. Use credit card statements if you have lost the receipt.
- 3). Save the Manufacturer's Certification Statement. The certificate comes with the furnace. You may need this certificate if the IRS calls questions your tax credit claim. The certificate is your proof that the furnace meets energy-efficient standards.
- 4). Fill out IRS form 5695 completely and correctly. You can get a copy of this form (entitled Residential Energy Credits) from the IRS website.
- 5). Attach form 5695 with your 1040 income tax return. This form entitles you to get a tax credit for your energy-efficient furnace.
