- 1). Remove the doors from the hinges with a screwdriver. Lay out drop cloths along the floor and set up two sawhorses to lay the doors across inside a well-ventilated area, such as a garage. Painting outdoors increases the risk of getting dust or debris onto wet paint.
- 2). Line each of the window panels on the interior side of the doors with painter's tape. Get as close to the edge as possible to reduce cleanup later. Fill in any scratches or nail holes with wood filler and allow to dry.
- 3). Smooth down the interior surface of the doors by gently wiping it down with a fine grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface down with a dampened cloth to remove any dust before painting.
- 4). Paint the interior side with a primer using a 2 ½ inch paintbrush. Make sure to prime the entire area twice for full coverage before painting. Allow to dry.
- 5). Cover the door using two coats of your desired interior paint color. Allow the door to dry thoroughly and determine if a third coat is needed.
- 6). Remove all of the painter's tape from the glass portion of the door. Use the flat edge of a razor blade to gently scrape away any paint that found its way onto the glass.
- 7). Rehang the door and reattach the hinges and handles.
