Cars & Vehicles Auto Insurance & Registration

Arizona Auto Policy

    Mandatory Insurance

    • Arizona law requires minimum levels of automobile insurance for all vehicles driven in the state. Purchasing coverage is necessary for motor vehicles, golf carts, motorcycles, and mopeds. The minimum amount of liability coverage for bodily injury is $15,000 for one person and $30,000 for two or more individuals. Property damage coverage of at least $10,000 is required as well.

    Definition

    • Bodily injury liability pays the medical costs for others who are injured by the driver. Property damage coverage pays to repair the other vehicle(s) and property damaged by a driver. These coverages do not pay an individual's own medical bills or vehicle damage. Insurance, which pays for your medical bills and damage to the vehicle, is the comprehensive and collision coverage.

    Punishment

    • Following an accident or at the time of a traffic stop, law enforcement will require that you show proof of auto insurance. A driver who does not maintain car insurance can have his vehicle's registration or his license suspended. Reinstating a license or registration requires payment of a $50 reinstatement fee. In addition, an SR22 form from the insurance company showing three years of future proof of insurance must be filed with the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department (MVD).

    Reason for Suspension

    • License or vehicle suspension, can occur when the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department does not receive proof of insurance when registration is due, when there is a lapse in coverage or an accident occurs. In addition, an incorrectly entered vehicle identification number (VIN) or information received by the MVD before a new car is registered can cause a suspension.

    Tip

    • Vehicle insurance is not mandatory in certain situations such as when military personal are on leave or if the car is not driven on roads. A De-Insured Certificate can be filed by the driver with the MVD on-line or at an office when a car is not being driven. Drivers are still responsible for paying all registration fees and taxes on the car however.
