While most neighborhoods in Seattle have some level of trick or treating action going on, not all are best for kids roaming from door to door in search of candy—some have houses spread out too far, some simply have low participation, some may not feel safe enough. Given that Halloween is in October, it’s also entirely possible that your kids will have to contend with some rain. Because of these things, you may want to consider a place to take the kids other than your own neighborhood. Each year, Zillow releases a list of best cities and neighborhoods for trick or treating. Many Seattle neighborhoods eagerly try to make and stay on the list.
Neighborhoods that often do well in the rankings, or are just generally great around Halloween include:
Wallingford – There is trick or treating at Wallingford businesses as well as throughout the neighborhood. Look for special happenings at Archie McPhee’s and other local businesses from Trophy Cupcakes to the Wallingford Center. Woodland Park Zoo is also within Wallingford if you want to add some Zoo Boo to your Halloween lineup.
Ballard – Ballard usually has trick or treating in the late afternoon along Market Street and Ballard Avenue, along with events at local spots like the Loyal Heights Community Center, Woodland Park Community Church, Fremont Studios and Tractor Tavern (for adults). Nearby Fremont also has some interesting happenings, including Trolloween at the Fremont Troll by the Fremont Arts Council.
Queen Anne – Neighborhood trick or treating for the kids, but the neighborhood is also known for its annual Queen Anne Halloween Monster Bash.
Capitol Hill – The clubs of Capitol Hill offer parties galore for adults, but there’s plenty on for the kiddies too, including a Kids Halloween Parade, trick or treating at Capitol Hill businesses, events at Volunteer Park and more.
Other neighborhoods worth checking out: Ravenna, Roosevelt, Magnolia, University District.
Whether you don’t want to set your kids loose in a neighborhood, have young children or it’s pouring down rain, the many shopping centers or malls in the Seattle area offer great alternatives. Just about every mall in the area offers trick or treating or other special events for families—from Bellevue Square to The Commons in Federal Way to the SuperMall. Other shopping centers to check include Bothell Country Village, The Junction and South Sound malls.
Trick or Treat House – Located in Montlake neighborhood (Hauntlake during October), a local resident named James W. turns his home into the ultimate Halloween house, thrilling trick or treaters and doing a bit of good along the way, too. During the entire month of October, bring food donations to the Trick or Treat House for a drive benefitting local charities.
Seattle Aquarium – The Seattle Aquarium hosts special events for the days around Halloween, including special enrichment activities and treats for some of the sea critters in the house. There are also educational programs that involve a little bit of the macabre—salmon dissections, for instance. Coloring, face paint and other fun is also on all day.
Seattle Waterfront – The businesses that line the Seattle Waterfront open their doors to trick or treaters. Pair this experience with some time at the Seattle Aquarium for some all-day fun.
Woodland Park Zoo – Join in the Pumpkin Dash 5K and 1K fun run/walk paired with many animals at the zoo getting their very own pumpkins to eat, smash and play with. The zoo also hosts trick or treating toward the end of its Halloween festivities.
Boo in Burien – Trick or treating at downtown businesses, hayrides, costume parades, a haunted house and more along 152nd and 153rd Streets in Burien.
