- 1). Ask the person directly. Calling someone or approaching him at a social gathering to explain, for example, that you're looking to make a career change and asking what he does to see if it might be of interest is perfectly acceptable. If you don't know the person well and don't feel comfortable approaching him, you can ask a mutual acquaintance.
- 2). Check his social networking sites. In today's world, many people have their employment history online. If you would like to know what Mr. X does for work and you're friends with him on Facebook, Myspace, Linkedin or another social networking site, check the information section of his profile. Often people list their current employer or even identify their previous employers.
- 3). Search his name with a search engine. If you're not friends with Mr. X on any social networking sites, you can type his name into the search bar of a search engine. If he has an open profile on any social networking sites, those will pop up. Also, if he has a website, it will be in the results, and you can go to it to see if he has an About Me or Employment History section. Other search results may include references to his company website in a news article or from a conference that will likely divulge where he works.
