Are You Doing Enough To Ensure Your Health Span Matchesyour Life Span?

Most of us fear getting old as we have seen all around us old people who are not functioning properly and their quality of life is very low. We do not want that to happen to us and fear losing our independence and ultimately our dignity when we cannot care for ourselves. But most of what we see in old people who need others to take care of them is nothing more than 30-40 years of neglect, inactivity and poor food choices.

The aging process itself has little to do with loss of muscle tissue and strength, stiff painful joints, poor circulation, unfit hearts, body parts and organs that are functioning poorly, low energy levels and susceptibility to disease. These things are the decline, decay and degeneration of not doing enough physical activity and in particular not enough muscle building and maintaining activity.

If you left your car in the garage for 30 years then decided to take it out for a drive you might be in for a surprise when the battery does not even turn the engine over. We know how important proper physical activity is to the human body yet 6 out of 10 adults live a no exercise lifestyle. How can they expect to keep their strength and vitality when they do not bother to use it? That is one of the most basic laws of nature yet people somehow think it does not apply to them and that they will get away with it.

But the problem is they do get away with it. Other people have to step up and take care of people whose health has been allowed to erode away. Family, friends, the community and ultimately our world are the ones that cop it in the long run. Resources, time, effort, money and energy are sucked away needlessly when it could be put to much better use.

The human body is fast becoming redundant and this is proven when studies show nearly one third of men and two thirds of women have difficulty waling up a mildly steep slope at a speed of 3 mph. Another study showed 30 percent of men and 50 percent of women aged over 65 did not have sufficient muscle strength or power to easily get up out of a chair without using their arms and could not lift 50 percent of their bodyweight.

Many people assume their hectic and 'busy' lifestyle replaces the need for proper exercise and studies show that 80 percent of then feel they do enough exercise even when they do none at all. This shows how distorted the perceptions really are about the need and nature of what proper exercise really is.

What it really means is we need to work our muscular system even though we do not need it very often in modern life. When we work our muscles under a load as with strength training exercise it stimulates 'growth and repair' hormones that tell our cells to rebuild, replace, renew and repair. Without these hormones we decay, degenerate, die.

We each have a choice about how we spend the last one half to one third of our life. Surely we should be the ones taking care of our own business - our health so that no-one else has to. We all need to live less from an intellectual perspective and create greater physical awareness in ourselves so our health span matches our life span.
