Decorating a Narrow Bedroom

1

Clear everything out of the room. Having a blank canvas makes it easier to decide what will fit in the room. Assess the condition of the room. Make any needed repairs to the walls.
2

Use paint and a large mirror to make the room seem wider. Paint the two long walls different colors. Choose contrast colors, or a lighter and darker version of the same color. Color is subjective. Don't be afraid to use dark colors; red can make a room appear cozy.
3

Hang the large mirror on the wall with the darker paint color, or use a floor mirror. The mirror will reflect the lighter color, brighten the room and make the room appear larger. Hanging a mirror opposite a window creates more natural light in a room and makes it seem wider.
4

Decide where to position the bed to maximize floor space and not block any doors. A bed with the longer side against the wall gives the look of a daybed. Position a three-high dresser or bookcase behind the head of your bed, instead of using a bedside table. Put lamps and an alarm clock on the dresser or bookcase for more floor room.
5

Divide your space to create smaller vignettes. If your room is extremely long, create smaller zones to break up the space. Use a drapery to create a delineation. Make a reading zone with a chair and an area rug and separate it from your sleeping zone. Place a floor lamp behind the chair and relax with a good book. You can also use a screen or room divider to create a delineation.
6

Hang the television on the wall. Or, if there is room, put your TV on an armoire. If there isn't room, flat screens can be hung on any wall and take up virtually no space. Use a wall mount with a swing arm to increase viewing range.
7

Hang draperies that complement your chosen wall color. Using floor to ceiling drapery allows the eye to travel up and down, and break up the space.
8

Make up the bed with your chosen linen. If you have a daybed look, finish it by positioning pillows against the wall, making the bed look more like a sofa. Put bolster pillows at each end to complete the sofa look.
