What is the Stock Market?

As a public market, the stock market or the equity market was established for the purpose of various company stocks at an agreed price.
At the beginning of October 2008, it has been estimated that the world stock market stands at a sizable amount of around $36.
6 trillion (US).
At an estimated value of around $791 trillion, the total world derivatives market is understood to be around eleven times the entire world economy's size.
Since the value of the derivatives market is mentioned in relation to the notational values, it cannot be compared in a direct manner to a stock value or a fixed income amount.
These values would be referring to the actual value.
There are huge chances of most derivatives ending up cancelling out each other.
This way, similar illiquid securities are considered held as marked to model instead of being considered an actual market price.
Buyers and sellers of various organizations who are listed in relation to their stocks and securities are brought together by stock exchanges.
It is here that the stocks are placed as lists so that they can be traded on, in the stock market.
The NYSE is considered to be the largest stock market in the whole of the United States.
In Canada, the TSX is the largest.
In Europe, the London Stock Exchange, Paris Bourse and the Deutsche Borse are some of the stock exchanges.
The TSE, the Hong King Stock Exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange and the Shanghai Stock Exchange are in Asia.
The BM & F Bovespa and the BMV are stock exchanges in Latin America.
In 1790, America's first stock exchange was organized in Philadelphia.
By the year 1817 New York was the min hub of stock market activities.
1842 saw the creation of the New York Curb Exchange which was set up to rival the NYSE.
The year 1921 became the year when the New York Curb Exchange was transformed as the American stock Exchange.
The NYSE Euro acquired it in 2008 and it became the NYSE Amex.
Currently, what is known as the 'traditional markets' are those which were earlier set up for the function of trading.
As technology advanced, it has become possible for several people to conduct their trading activities from their desks at work without having to use the services of the stock market.
However, the improvements in technology has only added to the years of adeptness and skills that the traditional markets have gained through their years of existence.
The advent of a hybrid market- one where technology has merged with tradition in the form of enabling trading through the electronic system- happened when the NYSE merged with Archipelago Holdings in 2006.
It allows for trading to take place from any part of the world.
Their transformation has made it possible to make NYSE Arca (the company's name post merger) a public trading company.
When the NYSE Group merged with EuroNext in the year 2007, it became NYSE EuroNext.
