Ideas on Abstracts

    Creating Abstracts with Shapes

    • Geometric patterns are easy to use to create abstract artwork.Thinkstock/Comstock/Getty Images

Create abstract artwork by using different shapes and sizes to create abstract patterns on a canvas or paper. Or use geometric shapes to construct a form that is normally curvy or flowing. For example, create a flower out of circles for the center of the flower and triangles for the petals and the leaves on the stems. Or use an oval for the body of a puppy with a triangle head and rectangle legs and tail. Abstract art is about using your imagination to create one object from another.

    Creating Abstracts with Colors

You can use abstract art techniques to express an emotion. Not only can you use shapes, but you can use colors can express emotion, too. Shapes do not have to be exact --- they don't have to be anything at all. Use colors like red to convey anger or maybe pink for romance. Splatter or scrawl yellow paint on a canvas to create a happy mood. It doesn't matter the subject --- just let the color do the talking.

    Exaggerated or Unusual

    • Use ordinary items in unsual ways to create abstract artwork.Ryan McVay/Lifesize/Getty Images

Abstract art comes in many forms. There are absolutely no rules and you are only limited to your imagination. You can take ordinary items and stage them in unusual ways or exaggerated forms to create your artwork. Create digital abstracts by taking a normal photo and applying special affects like stretching a human form out of proportion or rounding him into a roly-poly figure. The ideas is to capture another person's interest with an unusual piece.

    Creating Abstracts in Multiples

    • Create layers abstracts that look like they come out of a dream.John Foxx/Stockbyte/Getty Images

Another abstract technique is to create artwork by repeating the same or similar images in multiples on a surface. Stagger the items so they cover a canvas or printed surface in random placements. The end results will be a pieces that looks like something out of a crazy dream or a strange illusion. Again, anything goes --- just let your imagination go and stimulate the senses with extraordinary objects, colors and placements.
