Sleep Disorders, What You Need to Know

There are several different sleep disorders that affect millions of people.
Sleep disorders can be caused by a medical condition, or stress induced.
A sleep disorder caused by a medical condition, will most likely require life long treatment or medical intervention.
Stress induced sleep disorders are usually temporary and can be treated with medication, changing your daily routine or by simply waiting it out.
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that is generally associated with those that are overweight or over the age of 40.
A person with sleep apnea does not get enough oxygen, which causes a very light sleep, instead of the deep, restful sleep that is needed.
The use of a CPAP machine can be used to keep continuous air flowing through the airways.
Losing weight can help alleviate the systems in some cases.
Medical conditions like narcolepsy need a doctor's intervention.
Narcolepsy causes a person to fall asleep throughout the day, during normal activities.
Restless leg syndrome is the feeling of itching or feeling like you need to move your legs constantly.
Restless leg syndrome can usually be alleviated by getting up and walking around a bit, or rubbing the legs.
Sleep aids can be used for those who suffer restless leg syndrome.
There are several natural sleep aids that can be used to try and combat the itchy, twitching feeling.
Insomnia is very common in those that are under a great deal of stress.
Insomnia may occur for days or weeks depending on a person's lifestyle.
A person with insomnia may not be able to fall asleep, or may wake after just a couple of hours.
Insomnia can be treated with over the counter sleep aids for cases that are mild.
Over time if left untreated insomnia can lead to lack of sleep symptoms otherwise known as Sleep Debt.
Other treatments may include avoiding caffeine during the day, increasing activity during the day is also helpful.
Using relaxation techniques before bed can also help a person fall asleep easier.
If any sleep disorder is causing severe drowsiness or the inability to concentrate throughout the day, medical attention is necessary.
A severe lack of sleep can be dangerous to everyday activities like driving a car or operating machinery.
Some prescription medications may also cause insomnia, so it is important your doctor is aware of any medicines you are taking, including OTC medicines.
