There was a time when we used to jump with joy when our favorite player hit the boundary but today we sit tightly to our chairs as today there are beautiful cheerleaders who start their short but attractive dance performances on each boundary and sixes. Do this larger than life game of cricket really needs these cheerleaders, let us ponder over it.
The recent statement from vice captain of Indian cricket team regarding the presence of the cheerleaders distracting the players like, €I don't get distracted personally€, €If people are getting distracted that is their own mistake, I guess€ have instigated lot of people to comment in the favor or against his statements. Since 17th century the game of cricket is being played in India and we have never heard about cheerleaders. It was only when the IPL started in 2008 that the Indian viewers started enjoying blonds, brunets and red heads, dancing in groups in their skimpy clothes with pom-poms in their both hands, every time a cricketer hits a boundary or gets out. Music starts for a short time on these occasions and they start dancing. There was a time when the spectators used to make speculations about the player's uniforms for the match apart from their performance, today it is all about the dresses of these cheerleaders.
Mahila Congress also made a great fuss over the presence of these girls at Sawai Man Singh stadium in Jaipur during the IPL match of 2008. They were upset about the skin showing outfits of these cheerleaders and found it a disgraceful act to give some performance in such a way. As a result government had to ban the cheerleaders during matches in the stadium and managers of Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab teams had to obey it. If the fuss is all about their short and provocative dresses, well that can be changed. Recently, the Sahara Group Head Subrata Roy had made an announcement, €Cheer queens would go ethnic and perform Indian classical dances instead of western-style cheerleading.€ If you are interested to know more about the developments, buy sports images online.
It is not only the onlookers who are creating controversies about these cheerleaders, but these girls also, now and then, are blogging comments to create news. Like 22 year old South African Cheerleader Gabriella Pasqualotto, who was cheering for Mumbai Indians, blogged that Australian cricketers are €Fun but naughty€ and Indian cricketers are €Polite and well behaved€. These were fairly fine comments but she didn't stop there. She called cheerleaders €walking porn€ and obviously got fired for that.
If women are getting offended, cheerleaders are calling themselves indecent and players are getting distracted and finding it hard to give good performance in their presence (of course except Virat Kohli). What is the use of these cheer leaders then? Are these girls just to cheer the crowd or it is just an attempt to upgrade the Indian sports entertainment programs as the broadcasting of cricket has turned into money spinner. Will our favorite games of cricket survive without these cheerleaders? It cannot be for the crowd only. They will by default feel cheerful if the team gives a good performance rather than getting distracted by some scantily clad dancing girls besides the pavilion. Should we let the poor players hide behind after poor performance and let them blame it on these girls? Cricket has its own glory. We should let it remain as graceful as it always was and there is not a pinch of doubt that it can survive without their cheering.
