PSP Problems With the USB

    Power Problems

    • The PSP has the ability to charge using either an AC adaptor or the USB port. When using the USB port for charging, make sure that the mini-b connector on the PSP is firmly in place on the unit. Go to the main menu and change the system settings to USB Charge. Charge only from a direct connection to a PC or externally powered USB hub---never charge from a USB splitter or daisy-chain configuration. These can result in low power draw which will not fully charge the PSP and may damage it. If the power light does not turn orange, test your cable with another mini-b device such as a digital camera. Replace the cable if no charge is detected by the other device. Contact a certified Sony repair technician if the cable is not the problem.

    Data Transfer

    • The USB functionality of the PSP allows data transfer to a computer to backup Memory Stick Duo saved files. Problems with this result in the inability to move media between devices or create backup files. Use the settings menu on the PSP to turn on the USB connection. This should create a plug-and-play feature that is recognized by your computer automatically upon connecting the USB cable. If your computer does not detect the device immediately, try running the Add/Remove hardware feature of your operating system to detect the new hardware. In Windows 98, there is a known problem with the standard drivers and USB ports. You can download updated drivers from Microsoft's Windows 98 support page.

    System Updates

    • Another problem that may occur with the PSP to USB connection results in being unable to acquire system updates. This is most commonly fixed by using the correct directory format. Connect the USB cable and configure the settings to USB connection. Once connection is made, you will need to create a new folder titled PSP on the Memory Stick Duo. Within this new folder, make a folder named GAME. In the GAME folder, a final folder must be created named UPDATE. Visit the system updates page on the PSP website to download the latest system patch. It must be downloaded to the folder created on your Memory Stick Duo to update correctly.
