- 1). Find the ceiling and floor studs where you wish to place the new wall. Mark the studs with pencil.
- 2). Lay two of the 2-by-6-inch boards on their 2-inch sides, 8 feet apart. Attach the other two 2-by-6-inch pieces of wood (the floor and ceiling plates) to the top and bottom of the lumber with wood screws to form an eight foot square six inches deep.
- 3). Measure eight inches from one side and mark the floor and ceiling plates. Secure a 2-by-4 inch plank to the ceiling and floor plates with wood screws. Line up the bottom 2-inch edge with the bottom edge of the 6-inch deep square. Measure 16 inches from this plank and secure a second plank with wood screws. Continue all the way across the square.
- 4). Turn the skeletal wall over. Measure 16 inches from the side of the wall and secure a 2-by-4-inch plank with wood screws. Line up this plank with the bottom edge of the square. Repeat all the way across the wall. The studs on one side of the soundproof wall are staggered with the studs on the other side so that no stud reaches all the way through the dead space.
- 5). Lift the wall into place and secure the ceiling and floor plates with wood screws to the studs in the ceiling and floor.
- 6). Lay a bead of silicon caulk on the studs facing the room to be soundproofed. Place a sheet of drywall over the caulk. Secure with drywall screws. Repeat with the second piece of drywall, enclosing one side of the wall.
- 7). Stuff the fiberglass insulation between the studs in the wall. Make sure that the fiberglass reaches from one end to the other and from floor to ceiling.
- 8). Place a bead of caulk on the exposed studs. Secure the drywall to the studs with drywall screws.
