- 1). Set up the electronic tuner. If you are tuning an electric or an acoustic-electric 12-string guitar, plug the tuner into the instrument's output. If you have a traditional acoustic 12-string guitar, set the tuner near the sound hole of the guitar.
- 2). Tune the low E strings on your 12-string guitar. The thicker string is tuned to the exact same pitch as a regular guitar while the thinner string is tuned one octave higher than the thicker string. Carefully strike one string at a time to make sure you are getting an accurate reading on your tuner.
- 3). Tune the A, D and G strings on your 12-string guitar. These are all tuned in the same manner as the E strings.
- 4). Tune the B strings on your 12-string guitar. These strings are tuned in unison with each other as opposed to one being an octave higher than the other.
- 5). Tune the high E strings the same way you did the B strings.
- 6). Check the tuning of all 12 strings. Sometimes the action of tuning a guitar can knock some of the strings that you already tuned slightly out of tune.
