Who Is At Risk for Colon Cancer?

When we arrange for annual checkups, the last thing we want to consider is the possibility that something anomalous will show in test results.
After all, a checkup is just that - the annual assurance that everything is okay.
It is necessary, therefore, to make sure we keep our appointments and heed our doctors' advice on staying healthy throughout the year, so that these checkups are merely formalities.
However, if you believe you are in a high risk group for disease, particularly colon cancer, you want to be extra vigilant of health issues.
Knowing if you are in a higher bracket than others is helpful in determining your path toward optimal health.
Who is Most at Risk? It's said cancer doesn't discriminate.
Indeed, you can enjoy genetic strength and eat your fruits and veg daily, and still suffer a heart attack or other serious ailment.
You can never touch a cigarette in your life and still get lung cancer, so it stands to reason there is always some risk for colon damage.
You should especially be mindful, too, if you fall into any particular categories, including:
  • Age: People over the age of 50 are usually at higher risk than teens and young adults.
  • Family History: People who lost close relatives to colon cancer may be more likely to contract the same illness.
  • Personal History: If you have been treated for a different type of cancer, the chances of getting it in the colon may rise.
  • Ethnic Background: While no race is immune, it's been noted that African-Americans and people of Ashkenazi Jewish backgrounds have high rates of colon cancer.
If you have either in your ethnicity, you may wish to consult with a gastroenterologist.
The more you know about yourself, the more able you are to prevent illness before it begins.
Take care to know yourself and check up accordingly.
