- 1). Prepare the garden area where you want to grow your pumpkin patch by loosening the soil 8 to 10 inches deep. Spread 3 to 4 inches of compost over the soil. Mix the soil and compost together.
- 2). Place a stake at each point where you want to form a mound. Use a tape measure to space mounds 6 to 8 feet away from each other.
- 3). Drag the soil upward at each stake to form small hills. Use the tape measure or estimate by sight to make each mound 10 to 12 inches tall and approximately 2 feet in diameter.
- 4). Purchase pumpkin seeds for the variety of pumpkins you want to grow. Plant five or six seeds 1 inch deep into each mound with the individual seeds set 3 to 4 inches away from each other by planting in a circle.
- 5). Cover the seeds lightly and water the hill as often as necessary to maintain damp soil around the seeds. Watch for the seeds to germinate and grow to about 4 to 6 inches tall within three to four weeks.
- 6). Pull out the weakest seedlings to leave behind the strongest, healthiest two to three seedlings per mound.
- 7). Water the mound regularly to keep the seedlings growing through the summer, but avoid getting the leaves wet to minimize chances of disease. Allow the vines to sprawl on the ground between the mounds as they grow.
