- According to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, primary headaches are headaches rooted in neurological disorders, such as migraines, cluster headaches and tension-type headaches.
- According to MAGNUM, the National Migraine Association, migraines should be removed from being classified as headaches because they often carry many other symptoms which may or may not include head pain.
- Secondary headaches are considered symptoms of another medical problem, such as injury to the head or neck, brain tumors, meningitis or medication or drug withdrawal.
- If the headaches are thought to be problems with the nerves in the head, then it called a cranial neuralgia. Pain may be felt in the face, neck, throat or head.
- According to the International Headache Society, if there does not seem to be any cause for the headache, it is listed as "persistent idiopathic facial pain."
