GERD Safe Foods

Fruits and Vegetables


GERD safe fruits include fresh apples, dried apples, apple juice and bananas. Those suffering from the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease should avoid all citrus fruits and juices. Some safe vegetables for people with GERD include baked potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, green beans and peas. Tomatoes and tomato products should be avoided. Additionally, it is important to prepare these fruits and vegetables in a manner that does not require the addition of fat.

Meats


Several meats and proteins are GERD safe. Extra-lean ground beef, steak, London broil, skinless chicken breast, egg whites, egg substitutes and fish with no added fat are excellent meat choices for those who struggle with gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD sufferers should take care to avoid meats and proteins that are fried or have a very high fat content. High fat foods stay in the stomach longer, which causes the stomach to produce more acid.

Grains


Low-fat grains are a great choice for minimizing the symptoms of GERD. Choices of grains include multi-grain or white bread, bran or oatmeal cereal, corn bread, graham crackers, pretzels, brown or white rice, and rice cakes. People who suffer from GERD should include a serving of bread in every meal. Breads absorb some of the excess stomach acid, and this reduces the symptoms of GERD by reducing the amount of acid left in the stomach.

Sweets


GERD sufferers can also enjoy an occasional sweet treat. Some GERD safe desserts include fat-free cookies, jelly beans or red licorice. GERD sufferers can eat some other common desserts if the foods are prepared in low-fat versions. Low-fat banana bread is a great dessert for those with GERD. Other options include angel food cake and low-fat pumpkin pie. People with GERD should not eat desserts that contain chocolate and peppermint.
