Chat rooms and lately social networking sites (to numerous to mention) can not only bring in viruses and spyware but can lead to exploitation of children and along with numerous other problems that are published daily on the news.
Know what they are doing whether they like it or not.
They start at early ages now days so don't ever think they don't know what is going on.

Never have more than one Antivirus program on your computer.
They may conflict with each other and therefore not protect you.
It may cause you not to be able to access the internet or other programs also.
If you install an anti-spyware program with the antivirus program only install one not more.
These can help prevent spyware in most cases.

Anti-Virus programs are updated by the manufacture daily.
However, Viruses and spyware are written even faster.
This means that periodically a bad virus or spyware program can sneak through.

Check to see if you have an active virus and spyware protection program.
If yours has expired you are not protected.
You MUST activate it, update it and then run a full scan of your system.
Going without a program is asking for trouble.

If your Virus protection program doesn't find anything after scanning it has probably been hacked.
The program may look like the one you're used to but it may not be.
Some program may have overwritten it and every time you run it the virus spreads even more.

If your program has been hacked or doesn't find anything, uninstall and reinstall the program.

If that fails try system restore.

In Windows XP go to Programs > accessories > system tools then click on system restore.

Push the F1 key to ask it a question if need be.

Back up everything you ever want to see again.

On some computers you need to make your own recovery discs.
Other computers have you push a certain key when the introduction screen appears.
Normally once you do that your computer will be the same way it was when you first bought it.
You need to reinstall any programs that did not come with the computer or that you had upgraded.
You need to set up your mail program also.

If your computer does not have a recovery capability you will need put the Windows disk in the CD or DVD disk and follow the instruction when it loads.

If the disk does not load you may need to go into the BIOS and move the CD or DVD to a higher priority.

Then reinstall your Anti-virus or Anti-spyware program (s).
