- 1). A translator should have total fluency in at least two languages. A wanted professional translator and intrepreter should be fluent in several languages. You must be able to understand the language, reproduce it and convey the meaning of the interpretation.
- 2). Obtain a college degree. Most professional translators and interpreters need a bachelor's degree, not necessarily in the foreign language they are translating. Traveling abroad and immersing yourself in the language and culture is a great way to learn. An advanced degree in linguistic training, such as a master's or doctorate degree, is highly recommended. A certificate or degree from a translating or interpreting school approved by the American Translator's Association (ATA) also qualifies as an advanced degree. The ATA has a list of approved school on its website.
- 3). Gain experience. Highly experienced translators and interpreters are in demand. Companies and clients want to know you will be able to do the job well. Internships or entry-level jobs can help you get your foot in the door and get the experience you will need to become a true professional in the field. Contact professional translating companies to find out their hiring requirements. The more experience and practice you have translating languages, the more in demand you will be as a translator and interpreter.
- 4). Become certified. Only the most qualified translators and intepreters are eligible to be certified by the ATA.To be eligible to sit for the certification exam given by the ATA, you must be certified or accredited by a member association of the International Federation of Translators, have an advanced degree or approved certificate, have a bachelor's degree and two years' of work experience, or have five years of work experience.
