Writer's block can affect everyone at any stage. It is something that we come across at times when it is least welcome. It can sap the spirit and demotivate even the most enthusiastic of authors. If it hasn't happened to you, be prepared, it will. But there is no need to despair. All is not lost and everybody gets over it sooner or later. After all, why would anyone lose their writing ability?
Can this awful predicament be helped? Yes, yes and yes again. I hope to be able to show you ways in which you can begin to grapple with the menace of writer's block. And, don't be kidding yourself; it IS a menace especially if your livelihood depends upon your writing skills.
Start off with casting off the spectre of writer's block by going off and doing something different instead. Walk away from the situation. You can go for a hike, eat something or just sit and watch TV. Anything is better than trying to wrestle with the monster of creative blockage. You can resume as soon as you are recovered.
I believe that it is important to be aware of what is happening when you get this awful block. Your mind is shutting down and acting as a barrier to that creativity you are so desiring. Although we don't understand the mind, understanding that writer's block is a common evil will bring about a healthy awareness which helps us to work with the problem rather than fighting against it.
Do you ever feel muddy headed? I do. I recognise that I am more likely to do so when I have been abusing my body. Late nights, too much alcohol and a whole host of other unhealthy pursuits can lead to a lack of mental clarity. This can make writer's block more common and profound.
One way to minimise problems is to be preplanning your work. Articles and other written content can usually be planned in advance. What is the subject matter or topic? What do you need to be able to fulfil the requirements of the written work you are about to do and do you need to do any additional research or investigation?
It is helpful to always write about something you are familiar with. Writer's block is more likely if you are stressed about unfamiliar content or if you are pretending to be knowledgeable about something you know little about. Research the topic beforehand if you have no in-depth awareness of the subject area.
I know many people have particular ways they like to relax. I mean, REALLY relax. A lot of people try yoga or meditation. It works for them and I see them less likely to be stressed or flustered by a situation. I, personally, use relaxation tapes to help me unwind and clear my mind. I feel it has helped me to not only overcome writer's block but to be even more creative in the process.
