- 1). Lay the book open on a flat surface once you have glued the binding material over the surface of the cover. Measure the thickness of the cover with a ruler and write down the measurement.
- 2). Cut off each corner of the binding material at a 45-degree angle. Position the cut so it is one cover's thickness away from the corner of the cover. This will allow the tip of each corner to be covered by the binding material. Shave down the thickness of the cut sides of each corner by half using a craft knife, especially if the binding material is leather.
- 3). Apply a line of glue along the bottom and top inside edges of the book's front cover. Bend the edges of the binding material up and over the inside of the cover. Use a bone folder to smooth the material flat over the glued portions of the cover to remove any air bubbles. Repeat this process on the back cover of the book.
- 4). Open the book to the front cover. Place the tip of the bone folder underneath the corner of the binding material on the bottom corner of the front cover. Lift the bone folder up to bend the tip of the corner over and squish it down and inward toward the book. Repeat this process on the top corner of the front cover, and on both the top and bottom corners on the back cover.
- 5). Apply a line of glue along the inside vertical edge of the front cover. Bring the material up and over the inside of the book cover. Press the binding material down on the glued portion of the cover and smooth it flat with the bone folder to remove any air bubbles. Repeat this step on the vertical edge of the back cover.
