DOT Motorcycle Helmet Standards

It is very important when buying a motorcycle helmet, that you get the best protection for yourself.
Your brain is one computer that you want to keep intact.
So to make sure it is protected, make sure buy a truly dependable helmet.
It is definitely beneficial to learn more about the helmet you are going to purchase.
One of the most important things to look for is a DOT certified sticker.
DOT is the United States Department of Transportation.
They are designated by the United States Government to make sure that vehicles and the equipment they use are as safe as possible.
The standard is only the minimum levels of performance of the helmet to protect the head and brain.
It is up to the manufacturer of the helmet to test their own products.
Once the manufacturer finds their product passes the DOT standards, then the manufacturer can put the DOT certified stickers on the helmet.
What to check for in a DOT helmet? 1.
The inner liner of the helmet is thick.
The lining foam is about 1 inch thick.
If you can't see the lining, you should be able to feel it.
2.
A sturdy chin strap with solid rivets.
3.
The helmet weight should weigh approximately 3 pounds as opposed to only one pound or less.
4.
DOT safety standards do not allow anything to extend 2/10 of an inch from the helmets surface.
This includes spikes and other decorations.
5.
DOT sticker must be on the outside back of the helmets with the letters "DOT".
Once a manufacturer is able to put the DOT sticker on the helmets, they are also required to put a label on the inside of the helmet.
This sticker will have the manufacturer's name, model, size, month and year of manufacture, construction materials, and owners information.
Even though a DOT sticker is on the back of the helmet, the helmet may not meet ALL DOT requirements.
The 5 things to look for will give you the peace of mind that the helmet at least meets the minimum standards.
Of course one would think it is easy to get away with just affixing a fake DOT sticker to the back of the helmet and putting them for sale.
Well, DOT will periodically do compliance checks on helmets.
They send numerous types of helmets to their own labs for testing.
The findings are normally posted on the Department of Transportation website.
These random compliance checks are what deems your helmet safe! So, when buying a motorcycle helmet, make sure you know what you are looking for.
If you are looking to buy a helmet without DOT standards met, you may want to think again.
The minimum safety standards your helmet meets may save your life!
