- 1). Choose your best images from your photo collection. These will be the images that you would like to send to postcard companies. This may take some time depending on how large your collection is. Look for images that are both technically good and are interesting. Only when a photo is particularly funny or entertaining may it be worth sending when it is not the best from a technical standpoint.
Once you have chosen these photos, you may consider placing them in a special file on your computer. - 2). Go on a postcard hunt. Shop local stores for postcards and buy cards from as many different companies as you can find. These cards will serve as a starting point to finding more information about the postcard companies. These companies can be difficult to find on the Internet without a company name due to a flood of companies who specialize in custom-printed postcards for individual or business use.
- 3). Contact the postcard companies. Look on the back of the postcards you purchased to find contact information. In some cases, this may be a website while in others it may be a mailing address. If you find a website for the company, you may be able to locate photo submission information there. If it is not listed then you will need to email or place a phone call to the company's photo editor. If all you have is a mailing address, then draft a letter requesting information about their submission process and the types of photos they are interested in.
- 4). Take notes. Keep detailed notes on every company that you contact. You may do this informally in a notebook or get more organized and make a spreadsheet. It does not really matter what your system is so long as you keep the information straight and it all makes sense to you.
Your notes for each company should include contact information, submission process, any photo guidelines they have and the types of photos they are looking for. - 5). Compare your work to the companies. Take another look at the photos that you sorted out in step one and match them up to postcard companies that you believe will be interested in the photos based on your research.
- 6). Complete the submissions as requested by the company. Each company will have different specifications, but most will request that the photos be placed on a CD and mailed to them.
