- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable. The negative cable provides the ground for the vehicle's electrical system. Disconnecting the cable will ensure against a short while installing the new stereo. Loosen the negative battery cable with an adjustable wrench and move the cable away from the terminal.
- 2). Pull the wiring from the vehicle's stereo mounting dock. The speaker wires, power supply wiring, amplifier patch cables (if your vehicle is equipped with an amp) and the antenna will sit idle in the dock after the stereo has been disconnected and removed.
- 3). Plug the stereo wiring into a wiring harness adapter. The adapter will allow the wiring from various vehicle makes to connect with various aftermarket stereo units. Consult the wiring harness adapter manual for instructions on stereo wiring connection.
- 4). Install a faceplate adapter. The stereo mount of your vehicle was designed with the specific factory stereo in mind. To install an aftermarket unit, the faceplate adapter will provide a uniform platform for installation of various head units.
- 5). Plug the wiring harness adapter leads into the inputs on the rear panel of the new stereo. Plug the antenna cable into the antenna outlet on the stereo. For GM models, place the antenna adapter over the antenna lead before plugging it into the new stereo.
- 6). Slide the new stereo into the faceplate adapter. Push the stereo into the dock until it snaps into place. For some faceplate adapters you will need to screw in the stereo with screws provided in the installation kit or the ones removed to extract the factory stereo. Consult the installation kit manual for the proper procedure and for any tools needed for the task.
- 7). Replace any paneling to cover the stereo mounting dock. Some Ford and Mazda vehicles do not require dash panels to be removed during stereo replacement, while most other vehicles require that your remove some paneling during stereo removal, and replacement of that paneling for stereo installation. See your manual for protocol and any tools needed.
- 8). Reconnect the negative battery cable to the lead post of the negative battery terminal. Place the cable clamp over the post and tighten it with the wrench.
