A recent study has found eating raw blueberries can help conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
People with Type 2 diabetes do not just suffer with high blood sugar: they often go on to develop heart disease and can often be overweight - so this is really promising news.
This particular study was carried out on obese rats at the University of Maine.
The rats were fed a diet of blueberries - approximately 2 cups a day.
The results showed blueberries were able to be positively effective on the metabolic syndrome.
The metabolic syndrome is the name a group of diseases fall under - diseases such as:
The research team, co-authored by Dorothy Klimis-Zacas, also found blueberries specifically improved the relaxation and constriction of blood vessels - the endothelial function, which is what then had a positive effect on blood flow and blood pressure.
Again, this is vital for Type 2 diabetics as they can often suffer from poor circulation leading to nerve damage and eventually foot or leg amputation.
According to the Huffington Post, Dorothy Klimis-Zacas is reported to have made the following comments: "Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors characterised by obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure, inflammation, high cholesterol, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance, and endothelial dysfunction).
Many substances found in food have the potential to prevent metabolic syndrome, thus reducing the need for medication and medical intervention.
" The polyphenols found in blueberries may be what gives them the ability to help manage Type 2 diabetes and other types of metabolic conditions, as this antioxidant has been found in previous studies to help regulate the release of sugar and to lower blood pressure.
Foods Rich in Polyphenols include:
So, I feel by incorporating more foods rich in nutrients people can not only prevent Type 2 diabetes from developing, but the same foods that can prevent diabetes should be suggested to people currently living with diabetes.
These foods can have the same blood sugar regulating effects and protective effects for other diseases that occur in those living people with Type 2 diabetes.
