Sussex is a historic county located in South East England that covers an overall area of 3,783km².
The counties sit roughly in the area of the ancient kingdo, of Sussex.
In 1974 it was divided into two distinct counties, East Sussex and West Sussex.
Sussex borders Kent (also known as the garden of England) to the East, Hampshire to the West and the English Channel to the South.
Sussex is home to many tourist attractions including, Brighton pier, Hastings castle, the South Downs, Goodwood racecourse and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Southdowns stretch 80 km (50 miles) from Petersfield in Hampshire to Beachyhead on the outskirts of Eastbourne.
Their average height is around 152m even though Ditchling Beacon culminates at 248m.
The most famous cliff in the Southdowns is Beachyhead on outskirts of Eastbourne.
It is the highest chalk cliff in Britain rising at 162m above sea level.
Its height has made it a notorious suicide spot since the 1600s.
It is also home to the Belle Tout lighthouse that was built in 1831 but had to be moved 15m further inland because of cliff erosion.
Brighton rose to fame during the late 19th century when it became a favoured destination amongst daytrippers.
Its most famous landmark is the West Pier that was built in 1886.
However, it was closed down awaiting renovation in 1975.
Plans for a new pier the i360 were announced in June 2006 and approved by the council in October of the same year.
Nowadays, Brighton is renoun for its nightlife that mainly congregates around the beach, where may bars, restaurants and amusement arcades can be found.
There are also many live music venues in Brighton, including the Concorde2, the Brighton Centre and the Brighton Dome.
Another one of Sussex's popular attractions is Goodwood racecourse in Chichester.
The family of the Duke of Richmond whose seat is near Goodwood House owns the racecourse.
The course is only for flat racing, and it hosts many renouned races such as the Steward's Cup, the King George Stakes and the Goodwood Cup.
However, Goodwood is only famous in the horse racing world, it is also famous for playing host to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an annual hill climb event that features historic motor racing vehicules (both cars and bikes).
It was founded by lord March in 1993 in order to bring motor racing to the Goodwood estate.
Over years, the event has seen many famous participants, cars and drivers alike.
These include Brits Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell as well as a few former international stars such as Mario Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi.
