- 1). Mix together equal parts water and white vinegar and add just enough dish soap to create suds. Use this mixture to scrub the backsplash area to remove any grease splatters that may prevent the paint from adhering to the wall. Wipe the wall with a clean, dry cloth to remove the cleaning solution and dry the surface.
- 2). Outline the backsplash area with blue painter's tape. Rub the edge of your thumb along the edges of the tape to prevent paint from bleeding underneath the tape.
- 3). Apply one coat of water-based primer to the backsplash area with a paintbrush or paint roller. Let the primer dry completely. If the wall is brightly colored, apply an additional coat of primer to cover the existing paint.
- 4). Paint the backsplash with one to two coats of latex interior paint with a semi-gloss or gloss finish. A glossy finish will be easier to clean because you can easily wipe away grease or food splatters that occur while cooking.
- 5). Remove the tape when the paint has dried completely.
