- 1). Identify the type of veneer patch needed by measuring the depth of the original veneer with a ruler. Standard veneers are 1/40- to 1/32-inch thick and flexible veneers are 1/64-inch thick with a paper backing.
- 2). Identify the type of wood veneer that was used on your piece by purchasing a veneer identification pack and searching for the matching wood. Using a little solvent on the possible match and the piece will help you to compare the color.
- 3). Glue down any loose veneer on the piece by filling a hypodermic needle with wood glue, inserting the needle between the loose veneer and substrate, injecting the glue into the loose area, covering the area with waxed paper and weighting the re-glued area with a heavy book until the glue dries, approximately 24 hours.
- 4). Reshape the damaged area, by cutting through the veneer to the substrate with a craft knife and a metal straight edge as a guide, so that the area needing a patch is a diamond shape with the longest axis of the diamond parallel with the grain. Remove the additional veneer needed to even out the repair area with a pen knife.
- 5). Place a sheet of paper over the area and rub the tip of a pencil across the edges of the damaged area to trace the shape of the needed veneer patch onto the paper. Even pressure on the tip of the pencil on the paper against the removed veneer will allow you to create an exact rubbing of the needed patch.
- 6). Cut the traced shape out with scissors.
- 7). Put glue from a glue stick on the back of the cut out paper patch pattern and press the tracing to the top side of the new veneer. Choose an area of the new veneer that has grain that will match up when placed on the repair area.
- 8). Cut the new veneer patch to match the tracing with a craft knife using a metal straight edge as a guide.
- 9). Coat the exposed substrate, that you are applying the patch to, with a thin even coat of wood glue, applied with a small paint brush.
- 10
Press the patch into position, applying gentle pressure from the center of the patch out, without moving the new veneer patch. - 11
Place waxed paper over the veneer patch and weight the repaired area with a heavy book for 24 hours while the wood glue dries.
