The United States Navy has become a leader in training and computer careers. These careers allow recruits to gain much needed experience for civilian professions as well as support fleet operations through communication, intelligence and information. Computer careers are always growing within the Navy and they have become very important for Naval operations.

Computer Science

Computer science careers are integral to naval operations at sea and on land. The responsibilities of a computer science career in the Navy include maintenance and operating state-of-the-art computer systems including radar and sonar equipment. The basic requirements of a computer science career in the Navy include a high school diploma and an interest in computers.

Information technology careers support computer science careers. Information technology careers are responsible for programming specific applications, operating and coordinating automated networks, and collecting and analyzing communication signals along with many other responsibilities. A college degree is not required to enter the IT field, though previous experience is preferred.

A Navy telecommunication network engineer's maintain TV systems, install and maintain telephone and other communication systems as well as repair and maintain navigation equipment and plotters. Like many careers in the Navy, many telecommunications careers require a certain amount of security clearance.

Intelligence careers make extensive use of computers and communication technology. The responsibilities of an intelligence position in the Navy is target tracking, operating communications equipment, and maintaining combat information centers or CICs. The requirements for becoming a sailor in the intelligence field are quite steep. A new recruit must meet stringent security clearance requirements as well as meet minimum standards in a variety of fields including communication equipment, language and computers.
