Viral Meningitis Information

    Symptoms

    • Viral meningitis usually comes on suddenly. Symptoms typically include fever, fatigue, headache and stiff neck. Sore throat, vomiting and a rash may also develop.

    Cause

    • Although viral meningitis may be caused by several viruses, enteroviruses that live in the intestines account for approximately half the cases of viral meningitis in the United States.

    Transmission

    • The mode of transmission may vary depending on the specific virus although viral meningitis may be spread through direct contact or indirect contact such as saliva or infected stool.

    Diagnosis

    • Viral meningitis is diagnosed through physical exam, blood tests and examination of the spinal fluid.

    Treatment

    • There is no specific treatment for viral meningitis since antibiotics do not work against viruses. Bed rest and plenty of fluids are recommended. Medication for pain and fever may be prescribed.
