- 1). Clean the surface of the metal using soapy water and a #0000 steel wool pad to remove any dirt that could interfere with paint adhesion.
- 2). Dry the surface of the metal with a clean cloth, and then sand it lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. Sand the surface only enough to create a light texture of fine scratches throughout. This texture provides a surface that allows the paint to adhere securely without running.
- 3). Wash the metal surface a second time to remove any sanding residue. Dry it with a clean cloth.
- 4). Apply a thin layer of metal primer over the surface using a spray primer. Hold the spray can about 6-inches from the metal surface; then spray over the metal -- going back and forth in overlapping rows -- to ensure even coverage. Wait two hours for the primer to dry, then apply a second coat to cover any areas missed by the first. Wait an additional two hours for the second coat to dry.
- 5). Smooth the primer on the surface of the metal by lightly sanding it with the 150-grit sandpaper. Remove any irregularities left by the priming process with the sandpaper, but take care not to sand through the primer to the metal surface beneath.
- 6). Wipe the surface with tack cloth to remove the sanding residue.
- 7). Mix the Liquitex paint in the paint can using a wooden stirrer and then brush the paint onto the metal surface with a paintbrush. Use long clean strokes to apply the paint, covering the metal in an even coat. Allow the paint to dry overnight, before touching the metal surface or applying a second coat.
