What Are Specialists That Treat Chronic Ear Infections?

    Symptoms of Chronic Ear Infection

    • Chronic ear infection mimics the symptoms of acute infection. What differentiates the two is the onset and duration of the infections. Symptoms of an ear infection include fever, a feeling of fullness in the ear, earache, diarrhea, vomiting, and hearing loss. An infection is considered chronic when it is persistent and resistant to treatment. Chronic ear infections can cause permanent damage to the ear canal.

    Causes of Chronic Ear Infection

    • Most chronic ear infections are caused by blocked eustachian tubes, the canal that connects the back of the throat and the middle ear. When this tube is blocked, the ear is unable to drain properly. The buildup of fluid becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. When treated properly, the infection usually goes away. This is considered an acute episode. When the body is resistant to treatment or the infection does not go away completely the condition is considered chronic.

    Who Treats Chronic Ear Infections

    • Chronic ear infections are usually treated by ENT doctors. These physicians are specialists, having performed residencies focused on these parts of the body.

How Chronic Ear Infections Are Treated

    • Chronic ear infections are treated with oral, otic, or IV antibiotics. This antibiotic therapy may be a short or long-term course. Tubes may be placed in the ear to drain the fluid, or the mastoid bone may be removed if the ENT deems it necessary.

    How To Find an ENT

    • Because ENTs are specialists, you will need a referral from your primary care physician. If you think that you or your child is suffering from a chronic ear infection, ask your doctor for advice in treatment and a referral.
