- 1). Cut the lumber. Cut 4-by-4 legs to a length of 17 inches, cut eight, 48-inch top and skirt boards out of 1-by-4 boards and cut eight 1-by-4 boards to 18 inches long for end braces and seat supports.
- 2). Attach two of the skirt boards to two of the legs using 2-inch deck screws. Attach the posts to a point 3/4 of an inch from the ends of the skirts with one of the skirt boards flush with the top of the post and the other 4 inches from the bottom of the post. Repeat the procedure with the other two legs and skirt posts.
- 3). Attach the two leg assemblies together with two of the end braces on each end. The boards are placed between the skirt boards and fastened to the legs with two 2-inch decks screws at each joint.
- 4). Set the bench upright on its legs. Place the seat supports between the top skirts of the bench. Attach one of the seat supports to the inside of the legs on each end of the bench. Place the other two seat supports 18 inches from each end. Fasten the seat supports in place with two 2-inch deck screws through the skirting into the seat support.
- 5). Place the seat tops across the bench. The seat tops should be flush with each end of the bench. Place a gap of 1/2 an inch between each of the seat tops. Fasten in place with two 2-inch deck screws into each seat support.
- 6). Finish the bench with an exterior coating of paint or stain. Apply the finish to all surfaces including the underside of all the boards.
