- Permethrin is an insecticide that is safe for use on the human body. The drug works by paralyzing and killing both the adult parasites as well as all unhatched eggs. Permethrin does not treat the symptoms of scabies, such as itching and discomfort.
- Intended for use on the skin only, permethrin should be applied as directed by a physician. This medication is typically applied to the entire body and washed off after 8 to 14 hours.
- Side effects associated with permethrin use include itching, tingling, numbness, redness and/or irritation of the skin. Serious side effects that require immediate medical advice include rash, swelling and/or burning of the skin.
- Permethrin is also known by its popular brand name Elimite.
- In order to avoid complications and discomfort, permethrin should not be applied near the eyes, nose, mouth or vagina.
