- 1). Purchase replacement line that meets the needs of your weed trimmer and yard. As a rule of thumb, the thicker the line, the thicker the brush it can handle. Lines come in sizes ranging from .065 inch to .155 inch.
- 2). Unplug your trimmer from power, and turn it so that the trim head faces up.
- 3). Grasp the spool cover and pull it off of the trim head. Most models will have push-in tabs that will release the cover, though some may require you unscrew the cover or a retaining bolt. Lift the line spool out of the trim head and remove any old or damaged line.
- 4). Cut a piece of line off of your replacement line spool so that it is more manageable to wind. Most spools will hold between 10 and 20 feet of line; it is always better to cut off too much than too little.
- 5). Insert one end of the line into the retaining hole or tab on the inside of the spool. An arrow on the spool will show the correct direction to wind the line onto the spool. Wrap in straight and even lines until the spool is three-quarters full.
- 6). Trim off any excess line, leaving 6 inches of line protruding from the spool. Place this excess line into the slot on the spool flange.
- 7). Insert the free line into the hole in the trimmer head and replace the spool into the head. Pull the line until it releases from the holding slot in the spool. Snap or twist the spool cover back in place securely.
