Heat stress and heat exhaustion can lead to very serious and dangerous consequences. The human body has a limited temperature range that it operates in, and if the temperature rises above a certain level, the body's ability to cool down becomes greatly diminished. Learn how to recognize the symptoms of heat exhaustion to protect yourself and your loved ones. - Heat exhaustion is caused by severe dehydration. If left untreated, this can have dangerous and even lethal consequences. The initial symptoms of heat exhaustion include chills, light headedness, dizziness and headaches. More severe symptoms may include moist clammy skin, muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting, disorientation and impaired judgment.
- Anyone who is exposed to extreme heat for prolong periods of time is subject to heat exhaustion. However, the two groups most at risk are infants/children and seniors. Infants and children are at high risk because their bodies don't have high amounts of water, so they can become quickly dehydrated. Seniors are at risk because they may already suffer from chronic illnesses or take medications, and their body's ability to maintain normal body temperature has slowed down.
- Treat the first symptoms of heat exhaustion immediately to prevent more serious problems, such as heatstroke. A person suffering from heat exhaustion must cool down. Take the victim indoors, or find a cool, shaded area. Drink lots of fluids to rehydrate. The best fluid to drink is a combination of water and salt. Mix 1 pt. of water with 1 tsp. of salt. Apply wet clothes, and fan the victim. Don't give the victim any stimulants, such as coffee or cigarettes.
- Heat exhaustion, if left untreated, may lead to heatstroke, which is the most serious consequence of heat exhaustion because it is a life-threatening illness caused by severe dehydration which may lead to permanent brain or organ damage. The symptoms of heatstroke include extremely high body temperature, rapid pulse, hot/ dry skin caused by the body's inability to sweat, confusion and nausea and slurred speech. Anyone suffering from heatstroke requires immediate medical attention.
