A traveler with a Eurail pass should not pass up the chance to visit Bucharest when riding the rails throughout Europe. Bucharest is the capital city of Romania and is the entry point to the country. It is Romania's commercial and industrial hub with a growing population of at least 2 million. Local people speak the language of Romance which is the closest language to Latin. Bucharest boasts of a rich legend and history. Legend has it that it was built on the banks of the Dambovita River by a shepherd known as Bucur. Bucharest was then considered as the wealthiest city all throughout southeastern Europe due to its geographical location. It was the passageway of trading from east to west. In the early 1900s, the city is known to be the ‘Little Paris' due to its voguish parks and classy buildings which dominantly landscaped the whole area. The city has fallen and rebuilt several times after numerous natural disasters. The World War II also destroyed the pre-war beauty of the city. Romania joined the European Union in 2007.

Move further and you'll enjoy the charm of Calea Victorie and the gorgeous buildings of the CEC Headquarters, National History Museum, Revolution Square and Military Club along the street of Piata Natiunilor Unite.

Romania is one of the 25 countries counted on the Eurail system, though it does not get as many visiters due to its Eastern location. Those with a Eurail Pass will find getting here easy enough. The city's main train station is Gara de Nord, which serves most of the domestic and international arrivals. From here you can get to Romanian destinations such as Cluj-Napoca, Iasi and Timisoara. There are also direct train to Istanbul (outside of the Eurail zone) and Budapest, for connections to Western Europe.
