Definition:
Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (D.I.S.H.) is a type of arthritis with abundant abnormal bone formation. This abnormal bone can form as osteophytes (bone spurs) extending from areas of normal bone, and it can also cause bone formation in abnormal locations.
The most common sites of bone formation in D.I.S.H. include the spine and the heel. Bone formation in the spine occurs along ligaments, and can cause severe stiffening of the back.
Patients often complain of heel pain related to heel spurs (calcaneal spurs). Furthermore, abnormal bone spurs are often seen in joints throughout the body.
