Common Side Effects

The most common side effects that Ativan users might experience are not usually considered serious. These side effects are drowsiness, clumsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, feeling lightheaded, weakness and headache. These effects generally fade quickly, but if they are persistent or intensify, you should notify your physician.

Though relatively rare, serious side effects of Ativan also exist. These include loss of memory, hallucinations, insomnia, and mental or mood changes, such as depression, suicidal thoughts, agitation, rage, hostility, aggression, anxiety, nervousness and excitation. If you have any of these symptoms, you should get medical assistance as soon as possible.

There are also some rare side effects of Ativan. They include problems with orgasm, hair loss, nausea, changes in sex drive (either increase or decrease), erectile dysfunction, slightly lowered blood pressure, vertigo, constipation, changes in vision and slurred communication. The majority of people who use Ativan will not experience these side effects, but if you do, you should contact your physician. She may change your dosage or offer other solutions.

In certain cases, people might experience severe allergic reactions to Ativan. Allergic reaction symptoms include breathing difficulties; swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth and face; heaviness in the chest; itching; skin rash; and hives. Taking too much Ativan also can produce unpleasant and harmful side effects. This medication is not appropriate for everybody. People who are allergic to benzodiazepines, such as clorazepate, chlordiazepoxide, oxazepam and alprazolam, or who have narrow-angle glaucoma should not use Ativan .
