Carrying First-Aid Kits on Flights

According to reports over the recent years, it has been found that air travel is the best mode to cover long distance journeys. It is becoming popular day by day with increasing affordability and presence all across the globe. The introduction of low-cost carriers (LCC) has played an important role in this matter. However, a thing about air travel is that long journeys, many a time, affect travellers physically and psychologically. Altitude changes lead to the formation of different air pressure levels in the cabin which in turn affects passengers. As per studies, an average person can deal with the change in air pressure at a height of 7800 feet quite easily, but when the aircraft goes higher, uneasiness, anxiety, drowsiness or weakness can be experienced by many fliers. Different airlines provide immediate medical assistance in flights, which are enough to handle almost all the emergencies, but as per travellers, it is advisable that they carry their first-aid kit.

Terms and Conditions

The in-flight first-aid kit is more or less similar to the one that is kept at home. However, different carriers have different rules regarding the dosage and medicines, which can be carried on flights during the journey. Passengers need to go through these terms and conditions beforehand. If a prescribed medicine is significant, but not on the list of allowables, then passengers can contact the respective authority of the airline to take permission to carry it. This list can be found on various travel portals, who offer cheapest air tickets of different airlines.

Allowed in Airline Flights

Most of the first-aid kit items are allowed to be kept in the carry-on baggage, if they are not dangerous in any way for whole crew and flight. Each carrier has its own criteria, but as per studies the most common things which are allowed include pain relievers and adhesive bandages; and hence can be carried in the handbag or in an additional kit, if allowed by the airline. Bandage scissors with a blade not longer than four inches, triangular bandages, roller gauze, tape, lip balms, elastic bandages, barrier devices for CPR and gloves can be a part of the kit of travellers. However, experts emphasise on cross checking the list with the norms of the carrier to avoid issues while boarding or travelling.

Restricted on Airline Flights

In order to ensure safety of fliers, certain items are not allowed on airline flights. Common liquids such as hand cleaner, ointments, antibiotic gels, sprays, hydrogen per oxide, hand cleaners and chemical cold packs are banned because of security issues. The permission from security personnel can be required to carry prescribed drugs. Also, the dosages of restricted drugs are also decided by them after a thorough inspection. For instance, a diabetic flier can carry around 148 ml of glucose gel. They can also carry glucometers, syringes, lancets and some other essential diabetic supplies. As per frequent fliers, the airport security understands the medical needs of travellers.
